Pictures of Windy's MIG
« on: January 03, 2022, 02:48:26 PM »
I had posted a while back that I was looking for pictures of Windy Urtnowski's MIG.  Since it is also referred to as the MIG Sweeper it gets confused with Windy's original Sweeper,  Happily, Dick Houser had pictures of them both in his photo album having been at the 1980 and 1983 Nats and snapping them there!  Dick sent them to me and I have now scanned them to share with you all (Thanks Dick!!)

So, for your edification and enlightenment here they are (pay close attention as we will have a test, later):

It is 1980 and here is the Sweeper:

Dick has a note on the back of one of these photos that says "Ohio Nats 1980 - Largest C/L Stunt Ship weighs 8 and 1/2 LBS"  Note the size of a typical stunt ship in the background!

And now from 1983, here is the MIG:

Man, those flaps are HUGE, about a third of the wing area!
Narrowly averting disaster since 1964!

Hi, Scott.

I've mentioned in a previous post that I restored the blue Sweeper a few year back and it now resides in the manufacturing center.

It was nowhere near airworthy when I received it but it is now.

If you come to the 2022 Fly-In, and you are so inclined, you may fly it. Same for any other accomplished flyer.

Just let me know so that I can bring the lines.

I'm not sure about the 8 1/2 (136 ounce) pound weight.
I seem to recall around around 115 ounces but maybe my scale was off.
When I got it, it had a seized-up OS 60 so I installed the same engine but nearly new.
It flew quite well.

Bob:

Thanks for the offer, but I have to decline:
1) I have a bad record when flying other's airplanes
2) I am currently happy with the length of my right arm and do not want it lengthened  ;D

But, thanks again for the offer!

No problem, Scott - actually I feel the same way.
I rarely fly someone else's plane.

But, if there is enough interest and the (potential) pilot appears competent enough, I can still bring it out.
I'm not about to give the handle to a beginner or someone I don't trust.

Surprisingly, the pull is not all that bad.

By the way, does anyone know hwat happened to Windy's MIG?  Is it stuck in someone's attic someplace or did it go out in glory?

MiG. Folded the wings at Flushing meadows and crashed. Many little pieces
If I recall Jeff Steifel was the pilot.  I still have a piece of that plane The finish was outstanding

Fantastic!!  Our planes are made for flying, not gathering dust in someone's attic or basement.  So, if after a valorious career in the air, they don't end up on display in a museum they deserve to go out in GLORY!!

Just think: Jose - if you had swept up all the MIG pieces into a plastic garbage bag you could have put them up for sale on Ebay and retired early!  ;D
