Bob Hunt & Holeshot
« on: April 19, 2022, 03:42:45 PM »
this was intented to happen back in 2019, but modelling and lifeīs commitments and Covid put this project back for a while.
Back in 2019 sensing the lack of interest of Brazilians on building models and spending hours daily at whatsapp c/l groups talking about the past and losing connection with what our hobby is all about : building and flying iīve proposed a challenge to build a specific model within a 6 month period. The model chosen was Bob Huntīs Holeshot because is incredibly simple to cut and build, can be cheap as balsa consume is low, powered by 25/35 engines and in Brazil we have plenty CB 25 (local engine) laying around at almost every c/l flier workshop, FLIES GREAT, looks great and to top it all (indeed my first reason to choose) Itīs a homage to Bob Hunt, one of the nicest gentlemen around, great designer, world class builder, competitor and a full time supporter of control line worldwide. Bobīs modelling skills and hobby support are my role model since iīve started modelling in 1984 and saw his mag article on landing gear spats for his Genesis (flying models).
The challenge went well and some 15 modelers from the whole country participated ( rules are to show pictures of the building and a flight video) and a team would choose the best effort. Winner got a commemorative plate and Bob Hunt himself was kind enough to send a gift (one of his DVD-s).
I missed the challenge due to "life" entering my plans. I had my model close to finish process a few weeks before dead line....
Anyway covid enter the scene and with some extra time to spare it was time to finish her.
hereīs first pictures. mine is based on original plans but with some changes, so i called her Holeshot Master.
Since iīve took so long to finish the model a few email exchange with "the man" and he was kind to send me his autograph so i could add extra class to the plane.

i already had a profile e-powered holeshot ( that helped me to learnt the full round pattern within a year with no incidents) i decided that such fine looking plane would loove even better with a fat fuselage. I started to trace over the original plans and chose a new max 35 FP. And why not to do an i-beam wing? indeed my first i-beam and o loved the construction method. I have enlarged about 10% the wing and tail area, and after initial cut of the rudder i thought that Bene Rodriges Cheyenne 2000 striking tail ribbed desing would look good here too, so, more balsa was cut

clear red monokote was used to show the beatyful i-beam structure and paint was around the basic lines and colors that are my trademark, with full ink lines.
last weekend iīve maiden her, a bit anxious due to the unnusual 3 years for bulding. Fimnal weight ready to fly 1040 grams. 10x4 prop. the  plane flew straight, no hunting just a bit of up outer wing. inverted flight showed that more weight would fix it. Bit too fast for stunt but a great sight in the air and a hell of a glider when engine quit.

thank you Brian!
lettering is paint, but my logo on the rudder, pampa logo and the other color logo on the outer wing are water slide decals ( too small to pain)
grey ink lines and paint masks are hand applyed, i make a paper template ( with rules and french curves) laid over the plane and run the mask around the border. hope it helps to understand the process.

Wow! This is an amazing model, and certainly an improvement on my original Hole Shot concept. I remember when Fred sent me the first construction photos of his Hole Shot Master. I was very impressed with the details of his woodwork. Now I'm equally impressed with his attention to detail in the finishing of his models. Truly he is one of modeling's finest craftsmen.

My thanks go out to Fred for the things he has written about me and my designs over the years. I am hoping that we can get Fred to write a feature length article about his Hole Shot Master and prepare a set of plans for it to be published somewhere (Model Aviation or the new Stunt News perhaps...).

You da' man, Fred!

Bob

i canīt be more grateful and happier with your comments, youīre a trully craftasman and the first thing caight my attention back in the 80īs was how neat and clean your woodwork is, so this became my goal very early.
i would be very honored to do such mag article, will work on the plans set and send to you, thanks a lot for the opportunity!
i am so glad that internet made distant short and put all of us in contact with people we would only dream about meeting
regards from brazil

That Hole Shot wing/stab looks something like my FTwister. I notice the flaps taper out to almost nothing at the tips. I'm wondering if I should cut down my flaps a bit?

you may try to experiment owith the control horns before cutting-up.
